The Green Party of Virginia is in the midst of petitioning to place the
GP-US nominees for President and Vice-President of the United States on the
ballot in Virginia on the GPVA ballot line.
In order to place our candidates on the ballot, we must gather the valid
signatures of 10,000 registered voters, including at least 400 valid signatures
from each of the eleven Congressional Districts. This is no small task, but it
can be done - many hands make light the work! It's also a good opportunity for
outreach to the citizens of Virginia, many of whom don't know about us.
Tom Yager has agreed to
coordinate the petition drive. To that end, Tom needs the help of a District
Coordinator from each Congressional District to manage the drive at a local
level. If you are interested in becoming a District Coordinator, please contact
Tom Yager.
Download the GPVA petition form.
Important! Do not alter the names of the candidates, the electors or the
political party on this form. Because we needed to start petitioning before we
knew who the GP-US nominees would be, we used a stand-in candidate for
Vice-President. Do not place the name of the actual GP VP candidate on the
petition forms. Doing so will void those petitions. We will submit the proper
paper-work to the State Board of Elections to substitute the actual nominee for Vice-President.
Petitioning Tips
-
You may witness petitions for President/Vice President from people outside of
the Congressional District where you are registered to vote.
-
Each Congressional District must have a separate petition form.
-
Each County and Independent City within a Congressional District must have a
separate petition form.
-
Petitioners should prepare clipboards with forms for each combination of
Districts, Counties and Independent Cities in their area, and some blank ones
as well for people from out of town.
-
You must
write in the District number and the name of the County or Independent City on
each form.
-
Use post-its to separate the forms and to label them, like a tabbed document.
-
You might want to tie a pen (black ink) to the clipboard. Bring lots of pens -
they will walk away.
-
Ask prospective signers if they are registered to vote. If not, thank them and
go on to the next person.
-
If yes, give them the petition board.
-
Never ask a question that can be answered with a no. Instead, say, "I need your
signature" or "Please sign this ballot access petition."
-
As soon as possible, ask where they are registered - which County or City and
which District. They may not know the District, but they will probably know who
their Congressperson is. Then flip to the correct form on the clipboard.
-
Taping a map of the area to the back side of the clipboard, with the Districts
outlined, will help people who aren't sure about their District.
-
Try to get social security numbers, as this helps the SBE validate the
petitions, especially if people have difficult to read handwriting.
-
You must witness the signatures of the petitions you gather. You cannot witness
your own signature.
-
You need to get your petitions notarized before turning them to the petition
coordinator. Most banks provide free notary service.
-
Petitioning in teams is a good idea. One person can draw in prosective signers
and the other can witness the signatures.
-
If you have literature, give it to the signer after
they have signed, as doing this first gives the person an opportunity not to
sign.
-
If asked, make sure that people understand that signing does not indicate
support for the candidate, but does indicate a belief in democracy, that
candidates should be allowed on the ballot and that voters should be allowed
choices.
-
There's no sense in arguing with people who want the Greens to sit this one
out. Thank them for their point of view and move on.
-
For those who want to know, the GP-US will select the actual candidates at our
nominating convention in Chicago, July 10-14, 2008. Jesse Johnson and
Sheri Bailey are our stand-ins.
-
Always carry blank petitions with you - you never know when or where you might
find people willing to sign!
Petition Forms
-
The GPVA has posted a PDF file of the SBE petition
form, with names of our candidates and electors.
-
The form must be printed, front and back, on white legal size paper (8-1/2" x
14"). If not printed correctly, the petitions are invalid. Check your printer
settings to make sure that the printer knows to print this form on legal size
paper.
-
Forms can also be requested from a petition coordinator.
For each district, the petition must list the name of one and only one county
or independent city. A separate form must be done for each where you collect
signatures from those residents. Here is the list of counties and independent

NOTARIES NEEDED!
The Green Party of Virginia needs licensed notaries willing to volunteer their
services in witnessing affidavits on nominating petitions. We would like to
have at least one in each congressional district. So if you're a notary and
you'd like to help, please contact the Chair of your closest Green Local.
